Cooling Optimization By Simplex Curtain Containment

Polysim 509 Curtains Polysim 509 Curtains

Whether you are facing a hot spot issue or wanting to reduce your energy bill, containment is a proven approach in the data centre industry.  Simplex curtain containment solution is specifically design to satisfy the stringent requirement of a data centre.  From the material of the curtain, to the design of the mounting system, to the installation procedure, Simplex curtain containment solution can be installed without interrupting the operation of your mission critical data centre.

Curtain Material - PolySim

PolySim – PolySim is made from an inherently static dissipative polyurethane that provides nonhumidity dependent protection for sensitive data center environments where ESD is a problem. There is no plasticizer used in PolySim, making the volatile condensable contaminants (outgassing) extremely low. Because Polysim is an alloy using high molecular weight materials, the static dissipative properties are permanent. This material also allows you to meet sustainability goals because it is a urethane, as opposed to a PVC-based vinyl.

Features

  • FlexSim is made with the most environmentally friendly, universally accepted ingredients.
  • Our proprietary formula includes nonphthalate plasticizers and non-halogen (flame and smoke) additives.
  • FlexSim is the first domestically-made clear vinyl to pass ASTM smoke and flame tests.
  • FlexSim is specifically formulated to meet U.S. and European requirements for an environmentally friendly PVC.

Curtain and Mounting

Curtain and Mount Sample Curtain and Mount Sample

Simplex curtains comes standard in 2 formats:

  • Strip door: 1-ft wide and various length
  • Soft wall: 4-ft width and various length

Simplex curtains come with a bead afixed at the top of the curtain, which allow them to be easily hung on to Simplex hook bead bar mounting systems. All orders of Simplex curtains come standard with either a Flat Wall Hook Bead Bar or In-Jamb Hook Bead Bar.

The Hook Bead bars comes in two pieces, a frame and a cover.  This simplifies installation since both strip-door and soft-wall using the same hook bead system. The frame can be pre-installed with any facility contractors by securing it against existing or new infrastructure along the designed path of containment.  Anytime afterwards, the strip-door and soft-wall can be hung and adjusted as necessary on to the frame to align with rack edges and curtain door edges.  Finally, the cover can be screwed onto the frame anywhere along the gator jaw track to provide maximum flexibility.

Adhering to the Fire-Code

Fuse Link used to secured a Flat-Wall Hook Bead Bar Fuse Link used to secured a Flat-Wall Hook Bead Bar

In order to satify local fire-code, a fuse-link can be used to secure the hook bead bar to the existing data centre infrastructure.  The fuse link are 2 corrosion resistant brass plates fused together with a special formulated material.  The fuses are made to melt at specific temperatures (typically in data centre, 57 degrees Celsius is used), allowing the curtain to drop in case of a fire.

Fire-rating of Polysim curtains

The flame spread classification is based on the premise that the higher the number, the greater the hazard. Polysim has a flame spread of 10 and smoke density of 180, therefore it is a Class A material.

  • Class A Flame Spread – 0 – 25, Smoke Developed – 0 - 450
  • Class B Flame Spread – 26 – 75, Smoke Developed – 0 - 450
  • Class C Flame Spread – 76 – 200, Smoke Developed – 0 – 450

For your reference, other Class A material include brick, Plywood (Fire-retardant-treated construction) and Inorganic reinforced cement board etc.

Mounting to infrastructure

To provide maximum flexibility for installation and post-install adjustment, a optional DCT track mounting system can be used to easily secure the curtain against a false-ceilings using caddy-clips.  The DCT track is also equipped with the Gator Jaw track which allow the Hook Bead Bar frame to be easily screwed on anywhere along the DCT track.
